CHAPTER 6: VERSE 1

After this Jesus went away beyond the sea of Galilee, which
is the sea of Tiberias;

VERSE 2

…and a great multitude followed him because they saw the
signs that he did in case of the sick.

VERSE 3

But Jesus went up into the mountain, and there he sat with
his disciples.

VERSE 4

And the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.

VERSE 5

Jesus then, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great
multitude was coming to him, said to Philip:

JESUS

Whence can we buy bread, that these
may eat?

VERSE 6

But this he said to try him; for he himself knew what he was
about to do.

VERSE 7

Philip answered him:

PHILIP

Two hundred denarii worth of bread
is not enough for these, that each
one may take some little.

VERSE 8

One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter,
says to him:

VERSE 9

ANDREW

There is a lad here who has five
barley loaves and two little
fishes; but what are these among so
many?

VERSE 10

Jesus said:

JESUS

Make the men recline. And there was
much grass in the place.

The men therefore reclined, in number about five thousand.

VERSE 11

Jesus therefore took the loaves, and gave thanks, and gave
to those that reclined; in like manner also of the fishes as
much as they wished.

VERSE 12

But when they were filled, he said to his disciples:

JESUS

Gather up the broken pieces that
remain, that nothing be lost.

VERSE 13

They gathered them therefore, and filled twelve
traveling-baskets with broken pieces from the five barley
loaves, which remained after they had eaten.

VERSE 14

The men therefore, seeing the sign that he had done, said:

MEN

This is in truth the prophet that
comes into the world.

VERSE 15

Jesus then, knowing that they were about to come and seize
him to make him king, fled again into the mountain himself
alone.

VERSE 16

But when evening had come, his disciples went down to the
sea,

VERSE 17

…and having entered a ship, were going beyond the sea to
Capernaum. But darkness overtook them, and Jesus had not yet
come to them:

VERSE 18

…the sea also arose, because a great wind was blowing.

VERSE 19

Having rowed therefore about twenty-five or thirty furlongs,
they see Jesus walking on the sea, and coming near the ship,
and they were afraid.

VERSE 20

But he said to them:

JESUS

It is I, be not afraid.

VERSE 21

They then willingly received him into the ship, and
immediately the ship was at the land to which they were
going.

VERSE 22

On the morrow the multitude that stood on the other side of
the sea saw that there was no other little ship there but
one, and that Jesus had not entered the ship with his
disciples, but his disciples had gone away alone:

VERSE 23

…however, little ships had come from Tiberias, near the
place where they ate bread when the Lord had given thanks.

VERSE 24

When, therefore, the multitude saw that Jesus was not there,
nor his disciples, they entered the little ships and came to
Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

VERSE 25

And having found him on the other side of the sea, they said
to him:

MEN

Rabbi, when earnest thou hither?

VERSE 26

Jesus answered them and said:

JESUS

Verily, verily, I say to you, you
seek me not because you saw the
signs, but because you ate of the
loaves and were filled.

VERSE 27

JESUS

Labor not for the food that
perishes, but for the food that
abides to life eternal, which the
Son of man gives you; for him has
God the Father attested.

VERSE 28

They said therefore to him:

MEN

What must we do that we may work
the works of God?

VERSE 29

Jesus answered and said to them:

JESUS

This is the work of God, that you
believe on him whom he has sent.

VERSE 30

They said then to him:

MEN

What doest thou then as a sign,
that we may see and believe thee;
what workest thou?

VERSE 31

MEN

Our fathers ate the manna in the
wilderness, as it is written:
Bread from heaven gave he them to
eat.

VERSE 32

Then said Jesus to them:

JESUS

Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses
has not given you the bread from
heaven; but my Father gives you the
bread from heaven, the true.

VERSE 33

JESUS

For the bread which is God’s is he
that comes down from heaven and
gives life to the world.

VERSE 34

They said therefore to him:

MEN

Lord, always give us this bread.

VERSE 35

Jesus then said to them:

JESUS

I am the bread of life: he that
comes to me shall not hunger, and
he that believes on me shall never
thirst.

VERSE 36

JESUS

But I said to you that you have
seen and do not believe.

VERSE 37

JESUS

All that the Father gives me shall
come to me, and him that comes to
me I will not cast out;

VERSE 38

JESUS

…for I have come down from
heaven, not that I might do my
will, but the will of him that sent
me.

VERSE 39

JESUS

And this is the will of him that
sent me, that I shall lose nothing
of all that he has given me, but
shall raise it up in the last day.

VERSE 40

JESUS

For this is the will of my Father,
that whoever sees the Son and
believes on him may have life
eternal, and I shall raise him up
in the last day.

VERSE 41

The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said:
I am the bread that came down from heaven;

VERSE 42

…and they said:

JEWS

Is not this Jesus the son of
Joseph, whose father and mother we
know? How now says this man: I have
come down from heaven?

VERSE 43

Jesus answered and said to them:

JESUS

Murmur not among yourselves.

VERSE 44

JESUS

No one can come to me unless the
Father who sent me draw him, and I
will raise him up in the last day.

VERSE 45

JESUS

It is written in the prophets: And
they shall all be taught of God:
every one that has heard from the
Father and has learned, comes to
me.

VERSE 46

JESUS

Not that anyone has seen the
Father, but he that is from God, he
has seen the Father.

VERSE 47

JESUS

Verily, verily, I say to you, he
that believes has life eternal.

VERSE 48

JESUS

I am the bread of life.

VERSE 49

JESUS

Your fathers ate the manna in the
wilderness and died:

VERSE 50

JESUS

…this is the bread that comes
down from heaven, that any one may
eat of it and not die.

VERSE 51

JESUS

I am the living bread, that came
down from heaven: if any one eat of
my bread, he shall live forever;
and the bread also that I will give
for the life of the world, is my
flesh.

VERSE 52

The Jews then contended one with another, saying:

JEWS

How can this man give us his flesh
to eat?

VERSE 53

Jesus therefore said to them:

JESUS

Verily, verily, I say to you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son
of man and drink his blood, you
have no life in you.

VERSE 54

JESUS

He that eats my flesh and drinks my
blood has life eternal, and I will
raise him up in the, last day.

VERSE 55

JESUS

For my flesh is true food, and my
blood is true drink.

VERSE 56

JESUS

He that eats my flesh and drinks my
blood abides in me and I in him.

VERSE 57

JESUS

As the living Father sent me, and I
live because of the Father, he also
that eats me even he shall live
because of me.

VERSE 58

JESUS

This is the bread that came down
from heaven, not as the fathers ate
and died: he that eats this bread
shall live forever.

VERSE 59

These things spoke he in the synagogue as he taught in
Capernaum.

VERSE 60

Therefore many of his disciples on hearing it said:

DISCIPLES

A hard saying is this: who can hear
it?

VERSE 61

But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured
concerning this, said to them:

JESUS

Does this offend you?

VERSE 62

JESUS

If then you should see the Son of
man ascending where he was before?

VERSE 63

JESUS

The spirit is that which makes
alive; the flesh profits nothing:
the words that I have spoken to you
are spirit, and are life.

VERSE 64

But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew
from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who
it was that would deliver him up.

VERSE 65

And he said:

JESUS

For this reason have I said to you
that no one can come to me unless
it be given him of the Father.

VERSE 66

From this time therefore many of his disciples went back and
walked no more with him.

VERSE 67

Jesus then said to the twelve:

JESUS

Will you also go away?

VERSE 68

Simon Peter answered him:

SIMON PETER

Lord, to whom shall we go? The
words of eternal life hast thou;

VERSE 69

SIMON PETER

…and we have believed and known
that thou art the Holy One of God.

VERSE 70

He answered them:

JESUS

Have I not chosen you twelve? And
one of you is a devil.

VERSE 71

But he spoke of Judas, son of Simon Tscariot; for he was
about to deliver him up, being one of the twelve.
