CHAPTER 4: VERSE 1

When therefore Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that
Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John,

VERSE 2

…though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples
baptized.

VERSE 3

He left Judea and went away again into Galilee.

VERSE 4

But he must needs go through Samaria.

VERSE 5

He comes therefore to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near
the place which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

VERSE 6

And Jacob’s well was there. Jesus then, having been wearied
with the journey, sat thus on the well: it was about the
sixth hour.

VERSE 7

There comes a woman from Samaria to draw water. Jesus says
to her:

JESUS

Give me to drink.

VERSE 8

For his disciples had gone away into the city, to buy food,

VERSE 9

The woman, who was a Samaritan, says to him:

SAMARITAN WOMAN

How dost thou, being a Jew, ask
drink of me, who am a woman of
Samaria?

VERSE 10

Jesus answered and said to her:

JESUS

If thou hadst known the gift of
God, and who he is that says to
thee: Give me to drink, thou
wouldst have asked of him, and he
would have given thee living water.

VERSE 11

The woman says to him:

SAMARITAN WOMAN

Sir, thou hast nothing to draw
with, and the well is deep: whence
hast thou the living water?

VERSE 12

SAMARITAN WOMAN

Art thou greater than our father
Jacob, who gave us the well, and
drank of it himself and his sons
and his cattle?

VERSE 13

Jesus answered and said to her:

JESUS

Everyone that drinks of this water
shall thirst again.

VERSE 14

JESUS

but whoever shall drink of the
water that I shall give him shall
never thirst, but the water that I
shall give him shall become in him
a fountain of water springing up to
life eternal.

VERSE 15

The woman says to him:

SAMARITAN WOMAN

Sir, give me this water, that I
thirst not, neither come hither to
draw.

VERSE 16

He says to her:

JESUS

Go, call thy husband and come
hither.

VERSE 17

The woman answered and said:

SAMARITAN WOMAN

I have no husband.

Jesus says to her:

JESUS

Well hast thou said: I have no
husband.

VERSE 18

JESUS

…for thou hast had five husbands,
and he whom thou now hast is not
thy husband. This thou hast spoken
truly.

VERSE 19

The woman says to him:

SAMARITAN WOMAN

Sir, I perceive that thou art a
prophet.

VERSE 20

SAMARITAN WOMAN

Our fathers worshipped in this
mountain; and you say that in
Jerusalem is the place where we
ought to worship.

VERSE 21

Jesus says to her:

JESUS

Believe me, woman, that the hour
comes when neither in this
mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall
you worship the Father.

VERSE 22

JESUS

You worship you know not what; we
worship what we know, for salvation
is of the Jews.

VERSE 23

JESUS

…but the hour comes and now is,
when the true worshippers shall
worship the Father in spirit and in
truth; for the Father seeks such to
worship him.

VERSE 24

JESUS

God is spirit; and they that
worship must worship in spirit and
truth.

VERSE 25

The woman says to him:

SAMARITAN WOMAN

I know that Messiah comes, who is
called Christ: when he has come, he
will tell us all things.

VERSE 26

Jesus says to her:

JESUS

I that speak to thee am he.

VERSE 27

And on this came his disciples, and wondered that he talked
with the woman: no one, however, said: What seekest thou or why talkest thou with her?

VERSE 28

The woman therefore left her water-pot and went away into
the city, and said to the men:

VERSE 29

SAMARITAN WOMAN

Come, see a man that has told me
all things that I have done; is
this the Christ?

VERSE 30

They went forth from the city and came to him.

VERSE 31

In the meantime his disciples besought him, saying:

DISCIPLES

Rabbi, eat.

VERSE 32

But he said to them:

JESUS

I have food to eat that you know
not of.

VERSE 33

Then said the disciples one to another:

DISCIPLES

Has any one brought him food?

VERSE 34

Jesus says to them:

JESUS

My food is to do the will of him
that sent me, and finish his work.

VERSE 35

JESUS

Say you not that there are yet four
months, and harvest comes?
Behold,
I say to you, lift up your eyes and
behold the fields, that they are
white for the harvest.

VERSE 36

JESUS

Already he that reaps receives
reward and gathers fruit for
eternal life, that he that sows and
he that reaps may rejoice together.

VERSE 37

JESUS

For in this is the saying true,
that there is one that sows and
another that reaps.

VERSE 38

JESUS

I have sent you to reap that on
which you have not labored: others
have labored, and you have entered
into their labor.

VERSE 39

And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him
because of the word of the woman who testified that he told
me all things that I had done.

VERSE 40

When therefore the Samaritans came to him, they besought him
to abide with them; and he abode; there two days.

VERSE 41

And many more believed because of his word,

VERSE 42

…and said to the woman:

SAMARITANS

We no longer believe because of thy
saying; for we ourselves have
heard, and know that this is in
truth the Saviour of the world.

VERSE 43

But after the two days he went forth thence into Galilee.

VERSE 44

For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in
his own country.

VERSE 45

When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galileans received
him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem at the
feast; for they also had come to the feast.

VERSE 46

He came then again into Cana of Galilee, where he had made
the water wine. And there was in Capernaum a nobleman, whose
son was sick;

VERSE 47

…he, hearing that Jesus had come out of Judea into
Galilee, came to him, and besought him that he would come
down and restore his son to health; for he was about to die.

VERSE 48

Jesus therefore said to him:

JESUS

Unless you see signs and wonders,
you will not believe.

VERSE 49

The nobleman said to him:

NOBLEMAN

Sir, come down before my child die.

VERSE 50

Jesus said to him:

JESUS

Go, thy son lives.

The man believed the word that Jesus had spoken to him, and
went.

VERSE 51

And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told
him:

SERVANTS

Thy son lives.

VERSE 52

He then inquired of them the hour in which he began to mend:
they then said to him:

SERVANTS

Yesterday at the seventh hour the
fever left him.

VERSE 53

The father therefore knew that it was in that hour in which
Jesus had said to him: “Thy son lives” and he himself
believed and all his house.

VERSE 54

This again is the second sign that Jesus did on coming out
of Judea into Galilee.
