CHAPTER 18: VERSE 1

Having said these things, Jesus went forth with his
disciples beyond the brook of Cedar, where was a garden,
into which he entered, himself and his disciples.

VERSE 2

But Judas, also, who delivered him up, knew the place,
because Jesus had often gone thither in company with his
disciples.

VERSE 3

Judas therefore, having received the band, the attendants
from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, comes thither
with torches and lamps and weapons.

VERSE 4

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon
him, went forth and said to them:

JESUS

Whom seek you?

VERSE 5

They answered him:

BAND

Jesus the Nazarene.

Jesus says to them:

JESUS

I am he.

But Judas also, who delivered him up, stood with them.

VERSE 6

When therefore he said to them:
“I am he.” they went back and
fell on the ground.

VERSE 7

Again therefore he asked them:

JESUS

Whom seek you?

And they said:

BAND

Jesus the Nazarene.

VERSE 8

Jesus answered:

JESUS

I told you that I am he: if then ye
seek me, let these go away.

VERSE 9

That the word might be fulfilled which he spoke: Of those
that thou hast given me I have lost none.

VERSE 10

Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it and struck
the servant of the chief priest, and cut off his right ear;
and the name of the servant was Malchus.

VERSE 11

Jesus then said to Peter:

JESUS

Put the sword into the sheath.
The cup that the Father has given
me, shall I not drink it?

VERSE 12

Therefore the band and the officer and the attendants of the
Jews took Jesus and bound him,

VERSE 13

…and led him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of
Caiaphas who was chief priest that year.

VERSE 14

…and it was Caiaphas that advised the Jews that it was
profitable that one man should die for the people.

VERSE 15

But there followed Jesus, Simon Peter and another disciple.
And that disciple was acquainted with the chief priest, and
went with Jesus into the court of the chief priest,

VERSE 16

…but Peter stood at the gate without. Then the other
disciple, the acquaintance of the chief priest, went in and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.

VERSE 17

Then the maidservant that kept the door says to Peter:

MIDSERVANT

Art not thou also of the disciples
of this man?

He says:

PETER

I am not.

VERSE 18

But the servants and the attendants, having made a fire of
coals, for it was cold, were standing and warming them
selves; and Peter also was standing with them and warming
himself.

VERSE 19

Then the chief priest asked Jesus concerning his disciples
and concerning his teaching.

VERSE 20

Jesus answered him:

JESUS

I have spoken plainly to the world:
I have always taught in a synagogue
and in the temple, where all the
Jews come together, and in secret
have I spoken nothing.

VERSE 21

JESUS

Why dost thou ask me? Ask those
that have heard what I spoke to
them: behold, these know what I
said.

VERSE 22

But when he had spoken this, one of the attendants that
stood by struck Jesus with his open hand, saying:

ATTENDANT

Answerest thou the chief priest
thus?

VERSE 23

Jesus answered him:

JESUS

If I have spoken evil, testify of
the evil; but if well, why smitest
thou me?

VERSE 24

Annas then sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the chief priest.

VERSE 25

But Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They then
said to him:

PRIESTS

Art not thou also of his disciples?

He denied and said:

PETER

I am not.

VERSE 26

One of the servants of the chief priest, being a relative of
him whose ear Peter had cut off, says:

SERVANT

Did I not see thee in the garden
with him?

VERSE 27

Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately a cock crew.

VERSE 28

Then they lead Jesus from Caiaphas to the pretorium; and it
was early morn. And they went not into the pretorium, that
they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the
passover.

VERSE 29

Pilate therefore came forth to them and said:

PILATE

What accusation bring you against
this man?

VERSE 30

They answered and said to him:

JEWS

If this man had not done evil, we
would not have delivered him to
thee.

VERSE 31

Pilate therefore said to them:

PILATE

Take you him and judge him
according to your law.

The Jews then said to him:

JEWS

It is not lawful for us to put any
one to death:

VERSE 32

JEWS

…that the word of Jesus might be
fulfilled, which he spoke
signifying by what kind of death he
was about to die.

VERSE 33

Then Pilate entered the pretorium again, and called Jesus
and said to him:

PILATE

Art thou the King of the Jews?

VERSE 34

Jesus answered:

JESUS

Sayest thou this of thyself, or did
others tell thee of me?

VERSE 35

Pilate answered:

PILATE

Am I a Jew? Thy nation and the
chief priests delivered thee to me:
what hast thou done?

VERSE 36

Jesus answered:

JESUS

My kingdom is not of this world. If
my kingdom were of this world my
servants would fight, that might
not be delivered to the Jews; but
now my kingdom is not hence,

VERSE 37

Pilate then said to him:

PILATE

Art thou not then a king?

Jesus answered:

JESUS

Thou sayest, for I am a king. To
this end was I born, and to this
end have I come into the world,
that I might testify to the truth:
every one that is of the truth
hears my voice.

VERSE 38

Pilate says to him:

PILATE

What is truth?

And having said this. he went out again to the Jews, and
said to them:

PILATE

I find no fault in him.

VERSE 39

PILATE

But you have a custom that I
release to you one at the passover:
will you therefore that I release
to you the King of the Jews?

VERSE 40

They then cried out again, saying:

JEWS

Not this man, but Barabbas.
But Barabbas was a robber.
