CHAPTER 13: VERSE 1

But before the feast of passover, Jesus, knowing that his
hour had come that he should go out of this world to the
Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he
loved them to the end.

VERSE 2

And when supper had ended, as the devil had already put into
the heart of Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray him.

VERSE 3

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his
hands, and that he had come forth from God and was going to
God,

VERSE 4

…rises from supper and lays aside his garments; and having
taken a towel, he girded himself:

VERSE 5

…then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash
the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel
with which he was girded.

VERSE 6

He then comes to Simon Peter; he says to him:

SIMON PETER

Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

VERSE 7

Jesus answered and said to him:

JESUS

What I am doing thou knowest not
now, but thou shalt know after
this.

VERSE 8

Peter says to him:

SIMON PETER

Thou shalt never wash my feet.

Jesus answered him:

JESUS

Unless I wash thee, thou hast no
part with me.

VERSE 9

Simon Peter says to him:

SIMON PETER

Lord, not my feet only, but also my
hands and my head.

VERSE 10

Jesus says to him:

JESUS

He that has bathed has no need to
wash his hands and head, but is
wholly clean; and you are clean,
but not all.

VERSE 11

For he knew him that would deliver him up; for this reason
he said:

JESUS

Not all of you are clean.

VERSE 12

When therefore he had washed their feet and had taken his
garments, and reclined again at table, he said to them:

JESUS

Do you know what I have done for
you?

VERSE 13

JESUS

You call me:
Teacher and Lord, and you say well,
for I am.

VERSE 14

JESUS

If, then, I, the Lord and the
Teacher, have washed your feet, you
also ought to wash the feet of one
another;

VERSE 15

JESUS

…for I have given you an example,
that you also should do as I have
done to you.

VERSE 16

JESUS

Verily, verily, I say to you, a
servant is not greater than his
lord, nor is an apostle greater
than he that sent him.

VERSE 17

JESUS

If you know these things, blessed
are you if you do them.

VERSE 18

JESUS

I speak not of you all; I know whom
I have chosen; but that the
scripture might be fulfilled: He
that eats bread with me has lifted
up his heel against me.

VERSE 19

JESUS

Even now I tell you before it comes
to pass, that when it shall have
come to pass you may believe that I
am he.

VERSE 20

JESUS

Verily, verily, I say to you, he
that receives whom I shall send
receives me, and he that receives
me receives him that sent me.

VERSE 21

After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and
testified and said:

JESUS

Verily, verily, I say to you, that
one of you shall deliver me up.

VERSE 22

The disciples looked one at another, doubting concerning
whom he spoke.

VERSE 23

One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining in the
bosom of Jesus:

VERSE 24

Simon Peter then nods to this one and says to him:

SIMON PETER

Tell who it is of whom he speaks.

VERSE 25

Therefore he, leaning back thus on the breast of Jesus, says
to him:

SIMON PETER

Lord, who is it?

VERSE 26

Jesus answers:

JESUS

He it is for whom I shall dip the
morsel and give it to him.

Therefore, having dipped the morsel, he takes it and gives
it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.

VERSE 27

And after the morsel, then Satan entered into him. Jesus
therefore says to him:

JESUS

What thou doest, do quickly.

VERSE 28

But no one of those reclining at table knew for what purpose
he said this to him;

VERSE 29

…for some supposed, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus
said to him:

“Buy the things of which we have
need for the feast, or that he
should give something to the poor.”

VERSE 30

Having therefore received the morsel, he went out
Immediately; and it was night.

VERSE 31

When therefore he had gone out, Jesus said:

JESUS

Now is the Son of man glorified,
and God is glorified in him.

VERSE 32

JESUS

If God is glorified in him. God
also will glorify him in himself,
and he will immediately glorify
him.

VERSE 33

JESUS

Little children, yet a little while
am I with you: you shall seek me,
and as I said to the Jews, that
where I am you cannot come, to you
also I say it now.

VERSE 34

JESUS

A new commandment I give to you,
that you love one another; as I
have loved you, that you also love
one another.

VERSE 35

JESUS

In this shall all men know that you
are my disciples, if you have love
one for another.

VERSE 36

Simon Peter says to him:

SIMON PETER

Lord. whither goest thou?

Jesus answered:

JESUS

Whither I go, thou canst not follow
me now, but thou shalt follow me
hereafter.

VERSE 37

Peter says to him:

SIMON PETER

Lord, why can I not follow thee
now? I will lay down my life for
thee.

VERSE 38

Jesus answered:

JESUS

Wilt thou lay down thy life for me?
Verily, verily, I say to thee, a
cock shall not crow till thou hast
denied me three times.
